Hospitality & racing diary - October
18th Oct
It was a blustery autumn afternoon for Windsor's final race meeting of the year and with 73 runners spread over 6 races, it mean that heart racing action finished off the season in style.
14 year 6 & 7 pupils from Trevelyan Middle School in Windsor visited the racecourse as part of racings' free education programme "Racing to School" run by The British Horseracing Education & Standards Trust (BHEST). Visit their website here. The pupils completed a series of practical mathematical activities before being invited to stay on for the racing and to present the memento to the winnings owners of the first race, the CSP Median Auction Maiden Stakes. "Sandfrankskipsgo" took the race by ¾ length from favourite and course and specialist "Blanc de Chine".
"Scarlet Rocks" at 11/1 took the Windsor Vehicle Leasing Claiming Stakes by a comfortable 2 ¾ lengths ahead of 10/1 "Aye Aye Digby" and favourite "Retainer".
Christina in the Windsor Racecourse office has been taking on legendary bookmaker Barry Dennis in a tipping challenge, with their total winnings going to each of their nominated charities. Now Christina's method of picking a horse is all in the name and her tip of the day was "Beach Candy" at 8/1 in the Totequadpot Nursery Handicap Stakes, because she went to the beach at the weekend! "Beach Candy" battled to the line with "Dressed in Lace" and took the race after a photo finish by a short head. Christina was jumping up and down as she now takes the lead in the competition by 50 points to Barry's 17. You can follow the challenge until its conclusion in April on Twitter at @WindsorRaces.
There was another photo finish in the Toteexacta Handicap Stakes as favourite "Discoteca", "Vimiero" and "Broughtons Paradis" all battled it to the line a length clear from the rest of the group. After a lengthy wait "Discoteca" was announced to have taken the race on the nod.
Heart's were racing as the third photo finish in a row announced "Librettela" the winner of the Totepool Handicap ahead of 40/1 "Beggers Belief" by a head with third place 20/1 "Woop Woop" following 3 ¾ lengths behind.
The final race of the meeting and the season was the Ben Woollacott Memorial Handicap Stakes, taken impressively by 16/1 outsider "Doncosaque" by 1 ½ lengths ahead of Keiren Fox on board "Push Me".

5th Oct
Even though it was our first autumn fixture, it certainly didn't feel like October as the sun shone down on the racecourse on Monday, the meeting could easily have been mistaken for one of our midsummer night's!Crowds were gathering early for our busy afternoon meeting and it was great to see the racecourse alive with activity as punters studied the form and horses were being walked past the office to and from the parade ring.
The heart racing action started off with photo finishes from the first two races, 'The Chevron Malta Holidays Handicap (Div 1 & 2). Both races were keenly contested with 8/1 "Catchanova" taking Div I by a head from 16/1 "Sasheen" and Div II went by a neck to "L'Astre de Choisir" with Jim Crowley on board.
Top team Hannon and Hughes took the EBF Maiden Stakes with "Eurystheus" beating favourite and Frankie Dettori on board "Yaa Salam".
The fourth race was the Royal Windsor Racing Club Claiming Stakes, starring one of the club's horses, "Royal Alcor". After a slow start from the stalls he ran a blinder coming from behind to finish 3rd behind "Frontline Phantom" and favourite "Avon River".Jim Crowley rode his second winner of the night in 'The 70s Christmas Parties Here Handicap Stakes' with "Countess Comet", again by a neck, (it seems he likes to keep the racegoers on edge!) beating course specialist "Choral Festival" and the 5/1 favourite "Songburst".
