Royal Windsor Racecourse could be in for one of its biggest nights of the summer, with one of racing's fan favourite, Constitution Hill, under consideration for the Listed Weatherbys Digital Solutions August Stakes on Saturday 29 August - the closing instalment of this year's Summer Saturdays series and a fitting way to launch the August Bank Holiday weekend, should he be declared.
Trained by Nicky Henderson for owner Michael Buckley, the 2023 Champion Hurdle hero has enjoyed a flying start to life on the Flat. Constitution Hill made a hugely popular Flat debut at Southwell before following up with an equally polished performance at Kempton a month later.
Henderson now believes the time could be right to step his charge up in class, with the Listed August Stakes identified as a possible next assignment, one that could open the door to even bigger targets later in the year.
"Michael and I both think the Windsor race is a good starting point. It will be a prep race for what comes next, and I think he should be up to winning a Listed race, but we also know that by having a third run he would become eligible for the big handicaps," Henderson said.
A tilt at the Melbourne Cup remains part of the conversation further down the line, but a trip to the Berkshire track is understood to be under active discussion as the more immediate option.
Excitement building at the prospect of a bumper Bank Holiday crowd
Constitution Hill's Flat debut took place at sister course Southwell, a fixture that ranked among the best-attended racedays in that track's history. With the possibility of the star lining up in Listed company at Windsor on a Saturday evening on the bank holiday weekend, anticipation is already building.
Sam Cone, head of communications at Arena Racing Company, said: "There is real love for Constitution Hill among the racing public, so we're delighted to hear that he may now be targeted at the Weatherbys Digital Solutions August Stakes at Windsor.
"We had the benefit of seeing the effect that he can have at Southwell in February, which was an incredible evening for everyone who was there. Hopefully, a Saturday evening at Windsor on a bank holiday weekend will prove a great opportunity for racing fans to catch him live in Listed company for the first time."
Henderson's ties to Windsor run deep. He enjoyed success at the course early in his training career and was instrumental in bringing jump racing back to Windsor's reconfigured figure-of-eight track.
Cone added: "Nicky has long been a keen supporter of the racecourse, particularly with the return of jump racing and the Winter Million fixture, so it would be great to welcome him, his team from Seven Barrows and Michael Buckley to a summer evening Flat fixture."
Racing meets riverside party for the Summer Saturdays finale
The prospective visit couldn't fall on a bigger date in the Windsor calendar. Saturday 29 August marks the Closing Party of the track's popular Summer Saturdays series - and this year it comes with an extra headline act, as TV personality and DJ Mark Wright takes to the decks for a live set once the racing is done.
It promises to be a full evening of entertainment. Gates open at 15:08, with six races on the card taking runners from 17:08 through to a 19:45 finale, before Wright spins the biggest club anthems and feel-good anthems long into the evening, giving the fixture the Ibiza-tinged, hands-in-the-air atmosphere that has become a trademark of Windsor's summer nights.
Beyond the big-name entertainment, racegoers can make a full day of it. Riverside walks and picnics on the Lawn are all part of the backdrop, while French Brothers' return boat service from Windsor Promenade offers a scenic way to arrive, departing every 10-15 minutes from two hours before the first race. For those looking to toast the occasion, the track is also running an hour of drinks offers from the moment gates open, with up to 50% off draught beer, cider, ale and soft drinks, and £10 off bottles of house wine, prosecco, champagne and Pimm's jugs.
A full range of ticket options are available for the fixture, from Grandstand and Club admission through to reserved Lavender Lawn tables and the Winning Post Marquee, with under-18s admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets and hospitality are on sale and can be purchased here.
The Listed August Stakes: a proven launchpad
First promoted to Listed status in 2004, the Weatherbys Digital Solutions August Stakes has built a reputation as a genuine stepping stone to the top of the sport. Run at Windsor over 1 mile 3 furlongs, the race has been won in recent years by some notable names to go on and make their mark at the highest level.
Godolphin's Beautiful Romance features among the roll of honour, while 2021 winner Teona went on to claim Group 1 glory in the Prix Vermeille. The 2018 winner, Desert Encounter, later landed Grade 1 success in Canada before adding the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes - Windsor's other feature race - the following year. More recently, Charlie Appleby and Godolphin's Arabian Crown took the 2025 renewal. With prize money increased again for 2026, the race continues to attract high-class opposition and offers exactly the kind of stern test Henderson wants to see from Constitution Hill before any autumn or overseas targets are finalised.
Tickets on sale now
With Constitution Hill's participation still to be formally confirmed, all eyes will be on entries and final declarations closer to the day. In the meantime, tickets for the Summer Saturdays Closing Party featuring Mark Wright are on sale now, with early booking recommended for what is expected to be one of the best-attended fixtures of the summer at Royal Windsor.
